One Dress, 27 Looks Recap 1-16

At nearly two-thirds through the JZP One Dress Test, where I turn one LBD into twenty-seven different looks using only jewelry and accessories, it seems an appropriate time to take a look back and do a little progress assessment. The inspiration came from an Iris Apfel interview and I’ve tried to stay true to DMD’s purpose: baubles, bling and banter. As a result, I’ve kept shoes and bags to a minimum, wearing one pair of nude peep-toe pumps throughout except for a few minor occasions where they just didn’t go with the tone of the outfit and my hand was forced.

The LBD, Vivienne Westwood.

One Dress, 27 Looks: # 17 How to Wear Gold Without Looking Gauche

Intern Aria gave me a mild coronary the other day when she informed me that many of her friends shy away from wearing gold based on the premise that “gold makes you look tacky/cheap”.  Oh my DMD darlings, is this a thing amongst the younger flock?  For shame!

Let me dispel any misconceptions right now.  Gold does not make you look gauche! However, not knowing how to wear gold properly does put you at risk of receiving a few wayward glances.  So for look number #17, I’m going for gold, not even real gold mind you, gold costume jewelry. . .to prove a point.

Dress, Vivienne Westwood

Lessons in Gilding:

1)  If you’re going to wear gold wear a highly pigmented gold (for costume jewelry) or 18k and up (for fine jewelry).  Gold prices have gone through the roof this year and most commercial jewelry stores are selling more silver jewelry to keep costs low.  That does not mean that gold is no longer in style.  Quite the contrary, it means that gold is even MORE covetable.  SO don’t be afraid to go against the grain and wear a gorgeous shade of super-yellow gold while the rest of the flock are all sticking safely to silver.  I recently made a myself an @Jeanzpoh twitter handle necklace out of 22k gold because it’s so gold it’s practically orange.  Decadent swooniness!

2)  Don’t embrace or shun gold just because someone tells you its fashionable or horrid.  Decide for yourself.  Does gold look good on you?  If it does, well then by all means rock out!  Gold looks divine on olive and yellow skin tones as well as on blondes regardless of their skin tone.  Brunettes with a cool or blue undertone should be careful but then again, if you have blue undertones you might want to rethink that hair color sweetie and go for blonde instead.  Speak to your colorist. . .

3) Know what colors to wear it with.  Gold POPS against the neutrals: white, black, brown, navy, camel.  However, if you’re going for color, go for contemporary color combos.  For example:

Gold + orangey red = swoon

Gold + burgundy = grannypants

Gold + emerald/jade green = swoon

Gold + hunter/forest green = grannypants

4) Know how much jewelry you are comfortable wearing.  ”More is more” for some people and then for others, it’s just a bit odd.  Experiment, see how much jewelry and in what sizes you are comfortable wearing.  Par example, I can go BIG with earrings and necklaces but I need to watch it with the rings and bangles because I have small hands and wrists.  I am also of the belief that anything I pile on my head to make it bigger makes my bum smaller.  Seriously, the bigger the hair/hat/head the smaller the bum.  Whereas bracelets are working the proportions waaayy too south of the border. . .for me.  What about you?

5)  Break some rules.  Following the flock makes you one of the sheep, but in order to break the rules and get away with it, you have to be well-informed.  Here is a life lesson: know your shit (educate yourself), think it through (do it intentionally) and do it with conviction (confidence is the ultimate sell).

Raising the BaubleBar in Fashion Jewelry!!!

OK, if you haven’t already heard of BaubleBar, let me enlighten you about my newest crush.  We’ve all heard about mixing high-low ad nauseam, Galliano with J.Crew, Lanvin with Massimo Dutti, etc. etc.  But for the most part I have been unable to find really great designs at the lower end of the price range that are well-made AND well-designed.  So when I stumbled upon BaubleBar, I went a little overboard.  Seriously!

BaubleBar does fashion jewelry better than anyone else I’ve seen out there (OK, there are a few and yes you know who you are and you have or will be mentioned so don’t get grumpy!).  In particular, I LOVE LOVE LOVE BaubleBar’s collaborations!  They just finished a project with Erickson Beamon (one of my top 5 designer costume jewelry houses) and they still have a few pieces left here and are currently collaborating with DKNY.  Bet part of all?  At price ranges starting around $20 its guilt free like Fro-Yo!  Here are some things I have my eye on:

Raising the BaubleBar in Fashion Jewelry!!!
Erickson Beamon earrings for BaubleBar, here. I may have bought the last pair my DMD darlings, but rest assured, they are being re-stocked soon!

BaubleBar Tortoise Cuff, here.

BaubleBar, Black Gypsy Drops, here.
Raising the BaubleBar in Fashion Jewelry!!!
Motley Tie Strand, here.

Stack and layer, layer and stack! Oceana necklace shown here.

BaubleBar beauties are perfect for stacking, you can drape a boat-load around your neck and still have change left over for cocktails!  YAY!  Oh, and hint, they have Twitter feed necklaces.  I was debating on whether or not I should disclose this considering that I haven’t yet received mine but alas, altruism reigns.  They are like name necklaces except with twitter handles (@DelivMeDiamonds, @Jeanzpoh).  CRUSH!.  Apparently BaubleBar is revamping its Vault and will reveal a new loyalty program come April 30th so stay tuned.

Until then. . .

Vintage 80′s Revival Earrings, a Sprained Toe and a Skinned Knee

Oh my.  I had quite a weekend.  Hence my silence for 2 days straight.  I apologize my darlings, but I got a little carried away with a pair of vintage Zoe Coste earrings from the 1980s.  I adorned myself with these spectacular starburst beauties on Friday night and thus began a weekend of debauchery.

Zoe Coste was a French costume jewelry designer who began her career in Europe in the 70′s and later moved to New York and then expanded to other cities.  Her older pieces are signed “Zoe Coste Made in France” and the newer ones are usually signed “Design Zoe Coste, MOD DEP ” in a little circular emblem on the back.  Ms. Coste passed away in 2007 in Cannes but her pieces continue to be very au courant and have remained highly collectible.

The pieces that I own are 80′s glamour at its best and when I put on my starburst earrings or this heart and stars necklace of hers I can’t help but want to rock out.  How did this put me out of commission for 2 days you ask?  Well, it was girls night, I was channeling Jem and the Holograms with these earrings, a killer pair of 5 inch snake-skin platform stilettos and danced the night away, as we do.  Saturday I woke up with a sprained toe, yup, T-O-E and still managed to hobble to a boozy brunch in order to rehash the prior nights events and get a good amount of the giggles out of my system.  After sobering up from brunch during Mission Impossible 2, I was suffering hangover-induced vertigo and had to check out.  Note to self: do not watch action movies unless you’re 100%–regardless of how well you *think* you feel after a night out.

Sunday, the 80′s revival continued and The Hubby and I went ROLLER-SKATING, well, he had roller blades but I was rocking my white roller-skates like a CHAMP despite my sprained toe and skinned knee from Friday night.  Neither one of us had rolled anywhere for at least 15 years.  Needless to say, a lap around the lake and an hour later we were hobbling home, my skates hanging around my neck and a freshly skinned knee to show for it. . .same knee as Friday. . .again (I shall spare you pictures of battle wounds).

The moral of the story my dears?  Jewelry will inspire you to great lengths but make sure you know what you’re in for.  At the ripe age of 31 I ask myself: Is this behavior absurd for my age?  Not quite.  Is it beyond reproach though?  Not quite. . .

Ahh, I love the smell of Tiger Balm in the morning.

Big Kiss and Bigger Diamonds,

JZP

p.s. I actually do own a pair of earrings EXACTLY like Jem’s see picture below.

Fenton/Fallon

My goldfish memory didn’t fail me this time!  As promised, I shall enlighten those who haven’t discovered the wonder that is Dana Lorenz on the designer behind Fenton and Fallon.  If you haven’t heard the names Fenton, Fallon or Dana Lorenz dropped around yet then you’ve been living under a rock.  Ms. Lorenz is a darling of the fashion world and has been taking the costume jewelry world by storm since 2006.  The designer uses metals, rhinestones, crystals, feathers, leather, fur(!) and any other material she can get her paws on to create irreverent punk-meets-upper-east-side inspired gorgeousness.  I’m predicting that Ms. Lorenz will be a funkier downtown-Miriam Haskell for our times.

Fenton/Fallon
Fenton Fonssagrives Earrings

Ms. Lorenz has collaborated with Proenza Schouler and Thakoon for runway, done capsule collections for J.Crew (I told you J.Crew sometimes comes out with some damn good costume jewelry) and Opening Ceremony.  You can find Fenton/Fallon in my happy places Barney’s, Ikram, Colette, 10 Corso Como (Milano), Dover Street Market (London), Luisa via Roma, Liberty and Lane Crawford.  I am still slightly shocked that my second home (Bergdorfs) doesn’t carry her line but fear not my happy place online (www.modaoperandi.com) is hosting a Fenton trunk show until March 27th!

Fenton/Fallon

Fallon is the younger sister of the designer’s Fenton label and consists of more staple/layering pieces—no sleek way to say it so I’m just going to have at it—its a lower price point as well.  If Fenton is your Rick Owens leather jacket, Fallon is the Alexander Wang T-shirt you layer under it.  Get me?  Good.  Now be off and seek out your pretties and remember to blink once in a while—we don’t need you giving yourself diamond blindness.
